Breast Cancer Awareness Month: 5 Ways to Get Involved

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among American women, and every 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with this terrible disease during her lifetime.

This makes National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which happens every October, a particularly important time. During the month there are a variety of fundraisers, promotions, and initiatives all with the intention of raising awareness of the importance of screening and early detection, and to provide support for women and their families who have been struck by the disease.

How can you get involved and show your support? Here are 5 of our favorite ways:

1. Proudly Wear Some Pink

wear-pink-to-support-cancerPink ribbons have been the symbol of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month since 1991 when the Susan G. Komen Foundation began handing them out to participants who ran the NYC Race for Breast Cancer Survivors. Since then pink has become the official symbol of this important campaign.

During the month of October, pin a pink ribbon to your jacket or bag to show your support, or purchase some pink products such as shirts, scarves, car seat covers, and much more. A proceed of the sale goes towards initiatives to promote breast cancer awareness so that you can feel good about a little spending.

2. Have a “Dress Down” Day at Work

Offices are getting involved during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by hosting “Dress Down Days” when employees can wear jeans and t-shirts to work instead of their usual business clothes.

In exchange for the opportunity to dress casually during the workday, employees are asked to donate a small contribution towards breast cancer awareness. After the day is done, the donations are collected and provided to a local breast cancer organization.

3. Donate Your Hair

While cutting off a few inches of hair may not seem like a big deal to a healthy individual, for a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy who has lost her hair, a wig of real, human hair can make a big difference in how she feels about herself day-to-day.

4. Host a Bake Sale

Bake sales are a great way to collect donations during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Just ask a few friends or coworkers to spend an evening doing some baking and then host a bake sale at your office, community center, or even in your local park.

Advertise that the proceeds will be donated towards the American Cancer Society, or breast cancer awareness foundation of your choice and watch the donations roll in.

5. Lead by Example

Learn all you can about breast cancer awareness and speak to your loved ones about the importance of early detection. Be a role model and perform monthly self-checks and schedule your annual screening to make sure that you stay safe and healthy.
